Verso announced the closing of the Wisconsin Rapids mill in June 2020 and production stopped at the end of July, putting more than 900 people out of work and ending a run that started in 1904. The city issued a razing permit to MRD Group in September 2024 and the mill has been coming down since, eventually clearing roughly 220 acres of riverfront for whatever comes next. Paper did not leave entirely: the ND Paper mill at Biron on the edge of town still runs packaging paper with about 315 full-time employees as of April 2023, down from 425 in 2015.
