It was founded in 1856 as Kilbourn City and renamed Wisconsin Dells in 1931 to cash in on the gorge's fame - fame manufactured by one man, the photographer H.H. Bennett, whose stereoscopic images made it nationally famous. The town renamed itself after his pictures. Note Noah's Ark is in Lake Delton, not the Dells proper, and Tommy Bartlett's closed permanently in 2020.
