The non-farm anchors are Volm Companies, headquartered in Antigo and making produce packaging since 1954, Waukesha Bearings, whose Antigo plant has run since 1972 and is the largest of its four manufacturing sites at about 120 full-time people, Kretz Lumber, employee-owned since 2000, and Aspirus Langlade, a 25-bed critical access hospital. That mix produces a buyer who owns the house outright and has been in it twenty years, not a transient renter shopping the cheapest bid.
The old money was lumber. Francis Deleglise was a timber cruiser when he platted the town in 1876, and Antigo was known for its sawmills into the 1900s. The current money is what was underneath the pine: the Antigo Flats, a level glacial outwash plain at about 1,500 feet, whose Antigo silt loam was first mapped near the city in 1947 and named the Wisconsin state soil by the legislature in 1983. The same geography sets the build season - Antigo runs below freezing about 187 days a year and below zero about 43, and Wisconsin code puts footings at least 48 inches down - so exterior work has a short window and anything done wrong does not survive its first winter.
