Hazen was platted in 1913 when the railroad reached it, but the town you drive through today is mostly a product of the coal boom: population jumped from 1,240 in 1970 to 2,365 in 1980 and peaked at 2,818 in 1990 before settling back toward 2,300. The only National Register listing is the Fred Krause House, built in 1916, so there is no protected historic district here, just a working small city. That means the bulk of the housing stock is late-1970s and 1980s ranch and split-level, the kind of vintage now cycling through its second re-roof, original siding, and first-generation furnace replacement.
Energy is the anchor and it sits close. Beulah, about ten miles west, is next to the Freedom Mine, the largest lignite mine in the United States, plus the Antelope Valley Station and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant that both came online around 1984; the Falkirk Mine works the ground toward Underwood. Hazen itself holds Sakakawea Medical Center, and farming still fills in around the mines. The buyer here is blue-collar and stable, because mine and plant wages are real money and people put it back into their homes.
The old money was farming; the current money has been lignite since the mines and plants fired up in the early 1980s, which is the same stretch when the town nearly doubled. Lake Sakakawea sits about fifteen minutes north, the largest lake in the state, so there is recreation traffic and lake-property work layered on top of the in-town base. This is hard prairie country with deep winter frost and footings that go down around four feet, so roofing, concrete, and siding crews live and die by getting the exterior work in before the ground locks up.
