Cudahy is a company town in the most literal sense. Patrick Cudahy bought about 700 acres and resold parcels to his own employees; a 1921 company newsletter claimed half the houses in the city were built by the Cudahys, 95% of them on installment plans through the company's own building and loan.

The meatpacking plant opened in 1893 and named the city; the 2009 fire there is widely called the largest structure fire in Wisconsin history.
