Hazen was platted in 1913 when the railroad reached it, but the town you drive through today is mostly a product of the coal boom: population jumped from 1,240 in 1970 to 2,365 in 1980 and peaked at 2,818 in 1990 before settling back toward 2,300. Hazen itself holds Sakakawea Medical Center, and farming still fills in around the mines. The old money was farming; the current money has been lignite since the mines and plants fired up in the early 1980s, which is the same stretch when the town nearly doubled.
