That produces a steady, wage-earning homeowner - school and city payroll on one side, sugar and Red River Valley farm income on the other - the kind of buyer who maintains a house instead of flipping it.

American Beet Sugar built the East Grand Forks factory in 1926 at about 2,000 tons of beets a day, and since 1973 it has been owned by the valley's own growers through the American Crystal cooperative headquartered down in Moorhead.
