The defining fact sits eight miles south of town: the Clarence Iverson No. 1 well, drilled by Amerada Petroleum, struck oil on April 4, 1951, the first commercial oil well in North Dakota and the discovery that opened the Williston Basin. Tioga has billed itself the Oil Capital of North Dakota ever since, and the state marked the 75th anniversary of that strike in 2026. This is hard northwestern prairie with long winters and deep frost that dictate how foundations, water lines, and concrete get built, plus a steady grind of oilfield truck traffic that punishes every road and driveway.
