The old money was pine. Walter McIndoe renamed the settlement Wausau in 1850, sawmill owner Andrew Warren bought the land that became the East Side in 1853, and when the timber thinned the same families moved into paper and into door and window manufacturing. They also started an industry that outlived the trees: the Wausau Group organized Employers Mutual Liability Insurance, and on September 1, 1911 it wrote the first policy under Wisconsin's new workers compensation law to Wausau Sulfite Fibre, recognized as the first valid workers comp policy in the country.
