New Richmond's housing is defined by one afternoon. On 12 June 1899 a tornado levelled the business district and the southwest and northeast residential sections. The West Side district survived because the storm only clipped its eastern edge - and the National Register nomination says so plainly: it contains the largest concentration of pre-tornado homes left in the city.

West Side runs 1870 to 1911, eighteen houses and ten carriage houses, all contributing - Italianate, Shingle, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Foursquare, all but two of them frame. The downtown was rebuilt in brick after the storm, which is why the commercial district reads 1899 to 1917. The East Side district covers the 1870s to 1920s.
