It has been the Renville County seat since 1910, and the money is farming - spring wheat, durum, and canola on the surrounding prairie - with a thin seam of oil at the eastern edge of the Williston Basin, where Shell opened the county's Newporte Field in 1978. The most dependable employers are the Renville-Bottineau Memorial Hospital and the Good Samaritan nursing home, which puts health care among the town's largest job sectors alongside agriculture and retail.
This is north-central prairie a short drive from the Canadian border, and the weather is what decides whether exterior work lasts.
