Forest Lake started as a fuel stop. The first train on the St. Paul and Duluth line reached the lake on December 23, 1868, the railroad platted a village on the northwest shore the same year, and Michael Marsh opened a hotel that became a summer resort with room for 75 guests, two presidents, Cleveland and McKinley, among them. The village incorporated in 1893 with 175 people. By the 1920s it was a busy stop on the St. Paul to Duluth road that became Highway 61, with cabins and cottage resorts along the shore, and when I-35 was finished in 1969 it turned into a commuter town. The lake itself is 2,251 acres in three basins, 37 feet at its deepest, with three public landings and walleye, northern, muskie and bass in it.
The city annexed the township around it in 2001, which is why the census jumped from 6,856 people in 2000 to 18,375 in 2010; it was 20,611 in 2020. The result is a city of 35 square miles, five of them water, with lake lots, about 1,500 houses from the 1970s, and newer subdivisions. About 3,100 of the 8,700 housing units have gone up since 2000, the median home was built in 1988, about 620 predate 1940, and 27 percent are rentals. Footings go at least 42 inches down under Minnesota code, and lake lots mean docks, lifts, shoreline and retaining walls on top of the driveways and roofs.
