Oakdale Township was formed on October 20, 1858, and Arthur Stephen suggested the name at the first town meeting that November, after a grove of oaks near the town site. The township was farms, and the winter work was cutting ice on Tanners Lake. Pieces were carved off over the years, Lake Elmo and Landfall among them, and what was left became the city of Oakdale in 1968. The 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the North Pole, runs through town along Upper 35th Street. Imation, spun off from 3M in 1996, kept its world headquarters here until it sold the campus in 2016 to the owners of Slumberland for $11.5 million. It's the 4Front campus now, about 500,000 square feet across four buildings, with Slumberland's headquarters in it.

The Gold Line, a bus rapid transit line along I-94 from downtown St. Paul to Woodbury, opened in March 2025 with two Oakdale stops, Helmo Avenue and Greenway Avenue. A built-out suburb means replacement work: driveways, roofs, siding and furnaces that went in during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and the code puts footings at least 42 inches down in Washington County.
