River Falls grew up around the falls on the Kinnickinnic, a Class I trout stream that runs right through downtown. Joel Foster settled here in 1848, the Powell brothers laid out the village in 1854, and the normal school that opened in 1874 became UW-River Falls, with 5,222 students in 2024-25 and two laboratory farms on 303 acres. The Kansas City Chiefs held training camp on that campus every summer from 1991 to 2009. Glen Park, 41 acres above the river, dates to 1898, and its 1937 pool and the suspension footbridge over the South Fork are both on the National Register.

Two dams downtown, Powell and Junction Falls, back the river up into Lake George and Lake Louise. The city has been working to take them out since 2014, and in April 2026 the Army Corps of Engineers signed off on the study to remove both; the work itself is still years off. The housing is split down the middle: the median home was built in 1990, about half the units have gone up since then, and close to half are rentals. The city grew from 12,560 people in 2000 to 16,182 in 2020. Footings go at least 48 inches down under Wisconsin code, and the freeze and thaw is hard on driveways and slabs.
