Hastings was laid out in 1853 where the Vermillion and the St. Croix meet the Mississippi, incorporated in 1857, a year before Minnesota was a state, and named for Henry Hastings Sibley, the state's first elected governor. The river is still the story. The spiral bridge of 1895 was built to slow horse-drawn wagons coming down into downtown, became a tourist draw, and came down in 1951 because it couldn't take modern traffic. The bridge that replaced it was replaced in turn in 2013 by a $130 million tied arch, 545 feet across, the longest free-standing one in North America, carrying four lanes of Highway 61. Lock and Dam No. 2 has been here since 1930. Downtown, the East Second Street district is five blocks and 35 buildings from 1860 to 1900, on the National Register since 1978, and the county courthouse finished in 1871 for $63,000 is now City Hall. Smead, the file folder company founded in 1906, is headquartered here, and the state hospital that opened in 1900 became the Minnesota Veterans Home in 1978.
The housing is older than the suburbs to the west. About 800 homes in Hastings predate 1940, the West Second Street district is 13 houses from 1850 to 1890, and the median home was built in 1984. About 2,800 units have gone up since 2000, most of them before 2010, and the city held at about 22,000 people from 2010 to 2020. A quarter of the homes are rentals. The city is building three water treatment plants, about $70 million in all, to take PFAS out of its wells; construction on the first began in 2025. Footings go at least 42 inches down under Minnesota code, and the river bluffs mean retaining walls, stairs and drainage on top of the usual driveways and roofs.
