Apple Valley was Lebanon Township, farm country from 1859 until the developer Orrin Thompson started laying out subdivisions in the mid-1950s. When the township voted to incorporate in 1968, the name came from Apple Valley, California, where Thompson's firm was based, and it beat Lebanon Valley 1,376 to 757. The Minnesota Zoo opened on 485 acres here in 1978, one of two state-run zoos in the country, with 1.3 million visitors in 2019 and a 1.25-mile elevated walkway built on the old monorail track in 2023. Lebanon Hills Regional Park, 1,869 acres shared with Eagan, sits on the north edge of town.
