Maplewood was New Canada Township until February 26, 1957, when 14,200 people voted five to one to incorporate as a village; it became a city in 1982. It's 5.9 miles east to west and 10 miles north to south, with a southern leg 7.5 miles long and not quite a mile wide. 3M bought 139 acres of New Canada farmland in 1952 and 1953, finished its first research lab in 1955 and its first headquarters building in 1962, and by 1965 was a third of Maplewood's tax base. The Maplewood campus had 6,299 3M employees in 2023 by the city's count, the biggest employer in town by a long way. Maplewood Mall opened on July 31, 1974, on 125 acres at County Road D and White Bear Avenue, and St. John's Hospital, which started in St. Paul in 1910, was built here in 1985.
Maplewood grew up in the 1950s: 2,626 of its homes date to that decade, the median home was built in 1979, about a thousand predate 1940, and only about 900 units have been added since 2010. About 28 percent of the homes are rentals. Gladstone, the railroad town platted in 1887 that employed a thousand people in the 1890s until the shops closed around 1917, is a neighborhood now. The city had 34,947 people in 2000 and 42,088 in 2020. The Gold Line, a bus rapid transit line along I-94 from downtown St. Paul to Woodbury, opened in March 2025 with a stop in Maplewood. Houses from the 1950s and 1960s mean roofs, siding, windows, driveways and furnaces, and footings the code puts at least 42 inches down in Ramsey County.
