Prescott started as a trading post that Philander Prescott opened in 1839 where the St. Croix meets the Mississippi, and the rivers still run the town. The Highway 10 bridge over the St. Croix, a drawbridge 672 feet long and four lanes wide, opened in 1990 and carries about 13,000 vehicles a day to Point Douglas and Hastings; it replaced a 1922 lift bridge that charged a toll from 1923 to 1946.
