Bloomer started with a dam. Jeremiah Bloomer and a crew from Galena, Illinois, built a mill on Duncan Creek in 1848, the settlement that grew up around it was called Vanville until it was surveyed and platted in 1867, and the millpond is still there: Lake Como, 98 acres of water with a public landing, 11 feet at its deepest. The town calls itself the rope jump capital of the world.
