Durand started in 1856, when Miles Durand Prindle, 21 years old, came up the Chippewa in a keel boat called the Dutch Lady and settled the place first called Bear Creek. The city was incorporated on April 12, 1887, and it's the seat of Pepin County, the smallest county in Wisconsin by land, 232 square miles and 7,318 people at the 2020 census. The old courthouse went up in 1873 and 1874 for $7,000, in the Greek Revival style, and served until 1985. It's the last wood-frame courthouse standing in the state, on the National Register since 1982, and the county historical society runs it as the Heritage Center. Highway 10 crosses the river into town and meets Highways 25 and 85 here. AdventHealth Durand is a 25-bed critical access hospital.
