Anthony Judson Hayward looked the site over in the winter of 1878, the railroad came through in 1880, the sawmill went up in 1881, and the city was organized in 1883. The Big Mill burned in 1922, and tourism took over. The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame has been here since 1960, with its 143-foot muskie, the Lumberjack World Championships since 1960, and the Birkebeiner, more than 10,000 skiers from Cable to Main Street, since 1973.
Close to half the housing units in Sawyer County, 49.7 percent, were vacant at the 2020 census, and the American Community Survey counts about 6,800 of the county's 16,250 units as seasonal places. The Lac Courte Oreilles reservation, 108 square miles south of town with 2,968 people at the 2020 census, runs the Sevenwinds Casino, among the biggest employers in the county, and Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University in Hayward. The hospital opened in 1953 on the grounds of the old government Indian school and became Hayward Medical Center under Tamarack Health in 2023. In the city itself, the median home was built in 1976, about 350 units have gone up since 2000, 250 predate 1940, and 44 percent of the homes are rentals. Footings go at least 48 inches down under Wisconsin code, and the freeze and thaw is hard on driveways, foundations and shoreline.
