Ladysmith got its name in 1900, when Charles Smith, president of Menasha Wooden Ware, was about to marry Isabel Bacon Rogers and the railroad town called Warner renamed itself for the bride. The company was building a stave and heading mill here that year, and Menasha Paper put up a pulp and paper mill soon after. The Soo Line had reached the site in 1885, the village was incorporated in 1901 and the city in 1905, and the county, created in 1901 as Gates County, was renamed Rusk in 1905; Ladysmith is its seat. The Flambeau Mine, an open pit a mile from the city, took out copper, gold and silver from 1993 to 1997, and the reclaimed site has hiking trails on it now. On September 2, 2002, an F3 tornado went through downtown and destroyed much of it, about $20 million in damage. Weather Shield assembles aluminum-clad wood windows here, the biggest employer in the county, part of Pella since 2025, and Marshfield Medical Center opened its new 11-bed hospital on the river in 2023.
