Barron started as Quaderer's Camp, a lumber camp named for its foreman, John Quaderer, and took the name of Henry D. Barron when it beat out Rice Lake for the county seat. Barron County was created in 1859 and organized in 1874, and the county's government still sits here, 13 miles from its biggest city. The Yellow River, a branch of the Red Cedar, crosses the township from northwest to southeast and runs through the middle of the city on the way, and US 8 runs east to Cameron and west to Turtle Lake.
