Amery is named for William Amery, a carpenter who held a string of local offices in the 1870s, and the town was built around a dam. The first one went in on the Apple River in 1888 to run a sawmill and move logs downriver. It's been repaired in 1892, 1939, 1958, 1974 and 1992, the city and the Town of Lincoln have owned it together since 1974, and a lake district formed in 1975 looks after the water.
