Osceola is named for the Seminole chief, and it sits where Osceola Creek drops 25 feet over Cascade Falls on its way to the St. Croix. The Highway 243 bridge, built in 1953 and rebuilt in 1980, crosses into Chisago County, Minnesota, and the 1916 Soo Line depot in town is the base of the Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway, which the Minnesota Transportation Museum moved here from Stillwater in 1992; its trains run down the bluff, across an 1887 iron bridge and through William O'Brien State Park to Marine on St. Croix. The village grew from 2,421 people in 2000 to 2,765 in 2020. Polk County, 44,977 people in 2020, is Wisconsin's westernmost county, and its seat is Balsam Lake, 23 miles away. Footings go at least 48 inches down under Wisconsin code, and the freeze and thaw is hard on driveways and slabs.
